bio

Diana works with painting, mix media, photography, printing, installation and performance. Moreover she blends her art practices with art education, community art and as art curator. Constant traveling, her work moves as her views and influences are constantly renewed in her creative work.

Graduated from the Central University of Ecuador, owns a diploma in traditional Chinese engraving at CAFA, Beijing. Pursued studies in Visual Anthropology at PUCP and Ceramics in Lima, Peru.  Awarded with the 1st National Prize for Engraving, House of Culture of Guayas 1993. And a 1st Honorable Mention Bienal of Lima 1997. Worked as  co-director for “Positive Art Workshop” in Beijing, “El Camión del Arte” in Ecuador, Yangon Art and Heritage Festival 2015 – 2017 in Myanmar. She is also and art teacher.

In 2004 she developed ‘The Middle Way’ series where through photography and conceptualized poetry she presents her body memories trapped in a transition time and works. Multiples photographic layers of her, within Quito and Beijing, crossing cultures, and timeless memories compose the visual text.

In 2010, during a stay in Senegal, Africa. Where she took a serie of pictures of an ancient colonial Faidherbe bridge in Saint-Louis, which was in a process of changing, piece by piece was copied and reproduce in Europe, to replaced the old and corroded one. This process of replacement inspired a serie called ‘Repetitive Structures’ using fragments of photos, she developed a work based on the repetition of designs liked the African tissue patterns. As a metaphor of daily routines that creates a pattern in our every day lives, but also in the inevitable passage of time, about the expiration of the ideas and transformation. Everything is repetitive, everything happens over and over again creating a pattern in a lifetime.

From 2010 to 2015 she lived between Brussels and Lima, where she had elaborated her latest painted work inspired by Bosco, medieval drawings and Guaman Poma de Ayala making series of inks and serigraphy ‘Bestiary of Brussels’ which reflects this symbiosis and cultural exchange between the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque and their influences in Latin America, with the contact of a pre-Columbian culture rich in symbolism and imagery. Since 2013 she began to work in ceramics following courses with Nanay Valdivia and then at the Workshop-school of Sonia Céspedes Rossel both in Lima.

Diana pictures based on her body memories evoke the narrative of her life experience story. Actually she lives between Ecuador en Belgium.
