Repetitive Structures | 2010

Repetitive Structures emerges from my observation of time, transformation, and repetition. The project takes as its starting point the renovation of the Faidherbe Bridge in Saint-Louis, Senegal. Its deteriorated structure, dismantled and rebuilt piece by piece, became the conceptual and visual foundation of the work.

Using photographic fragments of the bridge, I rearrange and repeat its forms until they evolve into a visual pattern, entering into dialogue with traditional African textiles. Repetition becomes more than a simple act of reiteration; it becomes a process of transformation in which each fragment changes as it integrates into a new structure.

The bridge thus becomes a metaphor for the cycles of life: construction, erosion, destruction, and reconstruction. This perspective resonates with Vandana Shiva’s reflections on the regenerative cycles and processes of nature, as well as with an understanding of reality as a dynamic system of relationships and possibilities.

The work invites us to consider our own existence as part of these ongoing processes. Like the bridge, we too preserve fragments, transform structures, and continually rebuild ourselves. Repetition thus becomes a form of memory, movement, and renewal.
